Every mark you receive here gets compared against the rest of the class, and everyone’s marks are adjusted accordingly to ensure that a bell curve distribution is reached. A major difference between NTU and Manchester is the ‘bell curve’ system. It is very beneficial to make friendships with the local students here, as they are usually happy to help you with the work, and are very good at reminding you to study. The opportunity to travel is one that I am very grateful for yet it would be very easy to get carried away with travelling and forget about studying altogether. Indonesia is only a 45 minute ferry ride, and Malaysia is so close it’s possible to take day trips there. It seems strange to almost be finished with the semester whilst my friends back home have barely started theirs! The first set of midterms I achieved fairly average results, I blame this partially to not being in a good enough mindset for studying since it took me a while to adjust to a new routine, but I can safely say that I now feel at home in the library.ĭuring my time here I have been able to travel to a few other South East Asian countries, since Singapore is ideally located in the middle of South East Asia. It is week 10 of my exchange in Singapore and my second set of midterms begin next week. In her latest update, Maya discusses midterms, labs and her travels whilst out studying in Singapore for the third year of her degree. Thank you for your first post Maya! We look forward to hearing how you get on throughout the year.Study Abroad Diaries: Maya Gilbert – post 3 This drive to be recognised as a top university fosters a unique fast-paced learning environment for students and I am excited to become a part of it! In order to gain recognition and move up in league tables, NTU must ensure high standards are maintained and students are working hard.

The university is very young compared to an institution such as Manchester and therefore it’s an underdog in tertiary education. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a modern university, it boasts impressive, futuristic buildings and is surrounded by greenery. I am excited by this prospect as I believe that campus living will allow me to get used to the new environment and feel more comfortable faster than if I had to adjust to a whole new city as well as a new university and new continent all at once! Unlike Manchester, it is a campus university and is not integrated within the main city of Singapore. I will be studying at Nanyang Technological University on the West coast of Singapore. I am positive that I will experience the same adaptation when I arrive in Singapore. Moving from London to Manchester seemed like a huge change at first but I quickly adapted and got used to living in unfamiliar surroundings. Living and studying in Manchester has been amazing but the idea of studying abroad for a year has always appealed to me and I did not want to reject the opportunity to spend a year in a completely new environment. I’ve just completed my second year of my Chemistry degree at Manchester and in two weeks I’ll be moving to Singapore to study there for a year! Here’s her first blog post, written earlier this month, just before she embarked on her travels. Meet Maya, who will be keeping us up to date during her study abroad year as she ventures to Singapore. Study Abroad Diaries: Maya Gilbert – post 1
